Requirements

This competition is open to graduating high school seniors who are planning to study journalism and/or mass communications in college and prepare for a career in that field, have a GPA of 3.0 or higher, and have participated in high school journalism for at least 2 years.

Applicants must submit transcripts, 3 letters of recommendation (including 1 from their adviser who must be a member of the Journalism Education Association), an action photo or video of the applicant involved in an aspect of student media, a personal resume, a selfanalytical essay, and 4 pages of samples of their work.

Applications are to be sent to the applicant's state contest coordinator; winners from the state Journalist of the Year competitions are sent to the national level for judging.
