South Bay Chapter 53 Vietnam Veterans of America Scholarship provides financial assistance for college in any state to high school seniors in the South Bay area of Los Angeles County, California who submit outstanding essays related to a Vietnam era veteran.

Requirements
  • This program is open to seniors graduating from high schools in the South Bay area, including the Palos Verdes Peninsula and the cities of El Segundo, Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, and Torrance.
  • Applicants must be planning to enroll at a college, university, or technical school in any state.
  • They must submit an essay of 500 to 1,000 words on a veteran who served in the U.S. armed forces on active duty in the Republic of Vietnam between February 28, 1961, and May 7, 1975, or in any duty location between August 5, 1964, and May 7, 1975.
  • The essay must include a brief biography of the veteran and 1 of the following topics: 1) what the Vietnam war meant to the veteran; 2) what the Vietnam war meant to the veteran's family; 3) what the Vietnam war means to the student; 4) how the Vietnam war relates to America's history; 5) how current events impact the student's view about Vietnam veterans, or 6) how the Vietnam war experience affects current events today.
  • In addition to that essay, the selection is based on a short biography of the student highlighting school and community involvement and academic achievements and goals.
