Founded in 1839, BU has grown to include 17 schools and colleges and the Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences, offering more than 300 programs of study, with a low 10:1 student-to-faculty ratio. BU received $645.6 million in sponsored research awards in FY2023 and has been a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities since 2012. BU, as an academic community, greatly values diversity. The University places a strong emphasis on excellent scholarship, outstanding teaching, and interdisciplinary research, with major initiatives in data sciences, antiracism, public health, neuroscience, systems biology, photonics, biomedical engineering, medicine, and emerging infectious diseases, along with communications, the humanities, and the arts. With over 37,000 undergraduate and graduate students from all 50 states and 141 countries, and over 11,000 faculty and staff, discoveries and advances take place with exciting frequency on our three Boston campuses. Our "affordableBU" program meets 100% of demonstrated financial need, and our Pell Grant program guarantees eligible students a loan-free aid package. BU provides nearly $19 million annually in financial aid to Boston Public School graduates and contributes over $6 million a year in PILOT payments to the City. U.S. News & World Report ranks BU among the top universities and named BU among the nation's "Most Innovative Universities" for 2023.
