Boren Scholarships provide funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate students to study less commonly taught languages and subject areas in world regions critical to U.S. interests. The program focuses on geographic areas, languages, and fields of study deemed critical to U.S. national security. Interested students who apply to study in designated countries, in designated fields of study, or using designated languages receive priority consideration. Undergraduate applicants proposing at least 25 weeks of overseas study also receive special consideration.

Requirements
  • Planning an overseas program in a country outside of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand that includes language study as a core element
  • High school graduate or GED recipient
  • Seeking an associate or bachelor's degree in the U.S.
  • U.S. citizen
  • Provide a clear and compelling explanation of the relevance of their country, language, field of study, and overseas study to U.S. national security
  • Demonstrate academic preparation, cultural adaptability, flexibility, and maturity required to succeed abroad
  • Exhibit merit through a proven or steadily improving academic record
  • Aged 18 or older
  • Commit to working for the federal government for at least 1 year after graduation Preference is given to students of designated preferred countries, fields of study, or languages. Preference is also given to undergraduate applicants proposing at least 25 weeks of overseas study.
