Requirements

This competition is open to seniors at high schools in New Jersey whose nominating language teacher is a member of Foreign Language Educators of New Jersey (FLENJ).

Nominated students first submit an essay that requires them to use the language they are studying to respond to prompts prepared for the competition each year.

Based on those essays, semifinalists are selected to participate in an oral interview by telephone.

The combined essay and interview scores determine the winners.
