Requirements

This program is open to Illinois residents who are enrolled or planning to enroll at an Illinois 4-year public institution of higher education to prepare for a career as a public, private, or parochial elementary or secondary school teacher in the state.

Applicants must be undergraduate or graduate students seeking certification in an area of special education.

They must rank in the upper half of their Illinois high school graduating class.

Current teachers who have a valid teaching certificate that is not in the discipline of special education are also eligible.

Selection of high school seniors is based on ACT or SAT scores; selection of current college students and teachers returning to school to study special education is determined in a lottery.

U.S. citizenship or eligible noncitizenship status (including undocumented students) is required.
