Maryland Workforce Shortage Student Assistance Grant Program provides scholarship/loans to Maryland residents interested in a career in specified workforce shortage areas.

Requirements
  • This program is open to residents of Maryland who are high school seniors, undergraduates, or graduate students.
  • Applicants must be enrolled or planning to enroll at a 2 or 4-year Maryland college or university.
  • They may major in the following service areas: 1) child development or early childhood education; 2) human services (e.g., aging services, counseling, disability services, mental health, nursing, occupational therapy, physical therapy, psychology, rehabilitation, social work, special education, supported employment, vocational rehabilitation); 3) education, for students who become teachers in specified areas of certification; 4) nursing; 5) physical therapy or occupational therapy; 6) law, for students interested in preparing for a career in providing legal services to lowincome residents in the state; 7) social work; or 8) public service.
  • Applicants are ranked by GPA and then by need within each occupational field.
  • Students with the greatest need within each GPA range are awarded first.
  • The award is $2,000 per year if attending a Maryland community college fulltime (12+ credits per semester) or $1,000 per year if part-time (6-11 credits per semester). The award is $4,000 per year if attending a Maryland four-year institution full-time (12+ credits per semester for undergraduate; 9+ credits per semester for graduate) or $2,000 per year if part-time (6-11 credits per semester for undergraduate; 6-8 credits per semester for graduate).
