Founded in 1948 by members of the American Jewish community who sought to expand access to higher education for Jews, women and other marginalized groups, Brandeis today is an elite institution drawing top students of all beliefs and backgrounds to its liberal arts undergraduate program. A leading private research university, Brandeis' academic enterprise encompasses the social and natural sciences, the creative arts and humanities and a growing number of interdisciplinary programs. Brandeis boasts one of the nation's top programs in neuroscience, as well as a National Science Foundation-funded materials research science and engineering center (MRSEC), one of only 24 universities nationwide to receive this award. Admitted to the prestigious Association for American Universities (AAU) in 1985, Brandeis today hosts more than 30 on-campus research centers. Set on a hilltop in a pleasant residential neighborhood nine miles west of Boston, Brandeis' 235-acre campus boasts many distinctive buildings. The state-of-the-art Shapiro Science Center is home to biology and chemistry labs, including the lab of 2017 Nobel Prize Winner biology professor Michael Rosbash. Few private universities have come as far as Brandeis so quickly, evolving to a modern research university of more than 100 buildings, a $1 billion endowment, and ever-growing academic opportunities. Brandeis meets 100 percent of demonstrated financial need for all applicants, and awards more than $71 million in scholarships and grants each year to undergraduates. At the same time, it has cultivated a highly supportive atmosphere.
