From the Institution

Every year, the Cleveland Institute of Art (CIA) builds on an internationally recognized heritage of excellence and innovation that dates back to 1882. At CIA our mission is to nurture the intellectual, artistic, and professional development of students and community members through rigorous visual arts and design education. CIA offers an environment wherein students advance culture, community, and global quality of life through an approach we have coined, Cores + Connections. Our Cores + Connections approach to learning sets CIA apart. The word "core" comes from the Latin "cor" for "heart." At the heart of CIA, core values of faculty mentorship, studio and academic rigor, and state-of-the-art curriculum, all power extensive connections for student engagement in field-based experiential learning, real-world professional projects, and social practices in art and design. This building of better futures begins with our students' very first semester in Foundation studies and continues throughout their CIA education via general courses/engaged practice courses, extracurricular activities, and/or internships. Professional development continues as CIA Sophomore, Junior, and Senior BFA students are assigned an individual studio space in all major fields of study. All made possible by over 200 external partnerships, at last count!
