The Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture may grant credit for mathematics courses. The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) rarely grants AP credit. In 2018 a set of institutional goals and strategic priorities were approved to prepare students to question and lead in a complex world; develop leading-edge models for higher education that consider the ethical, cultural, and environmental contexts and consequences of technical and creative discipline; lead by example to promote civil discourse and engagement on important civic issues and advance the fields of Architecture, Art, and Engineering and foster intersections of study and practice among them. These goals and Cooper Union's educational priorities are a culmination of many avenues of exploration, evaluation, and community input. They draw on internal and external assessments of the academic environment with the goal of furthering the high quality and dynamic educational experience that Cooper Union is known for. The institution provides close contact with a distinguished, creative faculty and fosters rigorous, humanistic learning that is enhanced by the process of design and augmented by the urban setting. The College admits undergraduates solely on merit and awards half scholarships to all enrolled students; need based aid is also available.
