Since welcoming the first 320 students in the fall of 1968 as Jefferson County Technical Institute, Eastern Gateway Community College has remained steadfast in its principle that a community college must always respond to the educational, economic, and social needs of those it serves. Throughout its fifty-two year history, the institution has evolved from a technical college focused on workforce training to a community college serving two campuses and a national online program of more than 36,000 students offering over forty-five degree and certificate programs. The College continues to ensure higher education is affordable, accessible, and attainable for working people. In 2009, the Ohio General Assembly passed legislation to expand the College's service district and to change its name to Eastern Gateway Community College, then operating as Jefferson Community College. Its service delivery area expanded to Columbiana, Mahoning, and Trumbull Counties. Shortly after, the College established a site in Youngstown which was officially approved as a branch campus in July 2018. Today, the Steubenville campus includes three buildings. The D'Anniballe building (main campus) houses state-of-the-art classrooms and labs, a print center, the College's library, bookstore, and a modern student services facility in the Gator Center which offers a one-stop-shop experience for students. The Regional Workforce Building offers in-demand workforce training, and high school equivalency and English language classes. The Pugliese Center is the administration building. The Youngstown campus has grown to include three buildings. Humphries Hall houses state-of-the-art classrooms and labs, InfoCommons, and a bookstore. The Health and Workforce Building houses administrative offices, health programs, and workforce training. The Student Resource Center houses Enrollment Services, Financial Aid, and TRIO. Humphries Hall and the Health and Workforce Building were purchased by the College in 2020. These buildings are located in the heart of downtown Youngstown and are a significant part of the city's revitalization efforts. Recognizing the changing economy of the service area, and the significant number of students who were displaced workers or had family members who had been displaced, the College established partnerships with every major labor union in Ohio to leverage "last-dollar" scholarships for its members. With the College's low cost-per-credit hour and the high number of Pell eligible students in this demographic, the College offers free college to union members and their families. This is in addition to scholarships that provide free tuition to any high school graduate in Jefferson County, as part of its successful levy passages. As the Free College Benefit program gathered momentum beyond labor unions in Ohio, the College realized the opportunity to, once again, fill a void in higher education. By implementing and scaling a robust online catalogue of degrees, the College quickly became one of the most tech-enabled online colleges in Ohio. This early innovation proved tremendously beneficial during the 2020 global COVID-19 pandemic, as the College seamlessly transitioned to 100% online course delivery. Responding to pandemic-related job losses and academic disruption, the College launched The Summer Guarantee, which allowed any resident of Jefferson, Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull Counties to attend college for free during the Summer 2020 semester. The College submitted a waiver to the state to extend the Guarantee to Fall 2020. The College has a successful College Credit Plus dual enrollment program with local high schools throughout the valley. Over the last three years, 99 students from area high schools simultaneously earned a debt-free associate's degree while obtaining a high school diploma. The College has more transfer agreements with four-year colleges and universities across the state, as well as partnership with Central State University, Ohio's Historically Black College, to enable union students to earn bachelor's degrees. In all, students have transferred to over 1,543 other two or four year institutions throughout 45 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. Eastern Gateway Community College is proud to educate Ohio's twenty-first century workforce and of its commitment to ensure a quality higher education. Its track record of student-centered innovation will continue to break down barriers for working families to earn the degrees they need to be competitive in a fast-changing economy.
