From the Institution

Eastern Mennonite University is a four-year Christian liberal arts institution guided by the Anabaptist peace oriented faith tradition where rigorous academics and student engagement prepare leaders to meet the needs of a global society. The placement rates of EMU graduates, particularly in medical school, nursing, and teacher preparation, is a testament to the quality education at EMU. Located in Virginia's scenic Shenandoah Valley, EMU educates students who aspire to grow as unifying leaders equipped with intercultural competence, oriented toward peace and justice, and rooted in an active faith modeled on the life and teachings of Jesus. All faith traditions are welcome and celebrated. About 25% of students are Mennonite and over 50 religious groups are represented on campus. EMU provides an established cross culture program initiated over thirty years ago. EMU offers over 40 undergraduate programs and 20 graduate programs including a Center for Justice and Peacebuilding and seminary. EMU professors -- most of whom have lived internationally -- challenge students academically and mentor them to follow Christ's call to witness faithfully, serve compassionately, and walk boldly in the way of nonviolence and peace. EMU has emerged as a leader in sustainability initiatives, from its environmentally-friendly Cedarwood and Elmwood residence halls, campus garden, Creation Care Council and full-time recycling coordinator to academic majors in environmental sustainability and peacebuilding and development. The largest commercial solar array in the state of Virginia, installed on the roof of Hartzler Library, has the capacity to generate 104.3 kilowatts of clean energy for the campus. EMU athletes compete in NCAA Division III sports. Ministry assistants, community advisors and students in the graduate counseling program are part of the support network available to all students.
