From the Institution

Kutztown University, a member of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, was founded in 1866 as Keystone State Normal School. It became Kutztown State Teachers College in 1928, Kutztown State College in 1960, and achieved university status in 1983. The university's picturesque, 289-acre campus is located between Allentown and Reading in a community rooted in Pennsylvania German history and culture. KU has an enrollment of approximately 8,000 full- and part-time undergraduate and graduate students from 37 states and 38 nations. More than 70,000 alumni can be found across the globe. The academic year at KU consists of two, 15-week terms. The university also offers classes during two, five-week summer sessions and one online winter session. The faculty is teaching-focused with scholarly expertise. Ninety-two percent of KU's tenured/tenure-track faculty members have a doctorate or terminal degree. There is a 17:1 student-to-faculty ratio and the average class size is 24. Kutztown has 130 undergraduate programs in the Colleges of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Visual and Performing Arts, Business and Education. There are also 24 graduate areas of study, including two doctoral programs, and 15 certification or certificate programs. An Honors Program, study abroad, internships, student/faculty research and experiential learning communities round out the academic experience. Special facilities at KU include art galleries and studios, a planetarium and observatory, student-accessible computer labs, television production studios and radio station, public relations lab, social media hub, the Pennsylvania German Cultural Heritage Center, Environmental Study Area (Ecoplot), the Pennsylvania Small Business Development Center Lead Office, and access to the Chincoteague Bay Field Station in Virginia. Student life at Kutztown is highlighted by 200 student organizations. There are 22 NCAA Division II varsity athletic teams, a modern Student Recreation Center, and 19 recreation and sports clubs, including rugby and ice hockey. Residence facilities include traditional, suite-style and apartment-style; all with cable and Wi-Fi access and 24-hour security desks. Two eateries include all-you-care-to-eat premium meals and one 24/7 dining. The McFarland Student Union features the KU Campus Store, Starbucks coffee shop, and E-Sports arena. Additionally, there are four coffee shops, snack bars and grills, and a Chik-fil-A.
