From the Institution

In 1837, Mary Lyon did the unthinkable. She founded the Mount Holyoke Female Seminary, which later became Mount Holyoke College - the first of the Seven Sisters. A bold and transformative act, especially for a woman of her time. In doing so, she forever changed the landscape of higher education - not just for women in South Hadley, Massachusetts, but for women around the world. She built a place where women could enhance their intellects, amplify their voices and cultivate courage. The world today is changing faster than ever. While Mary Lyon couldn't have imagined a digitally connected society, she understood something timeless: a woman must be agile, creative, and fearless to shape her own future. Her vision still drives Mount Holyoke. Mary Lyon once issued a challenge to the women who would follow her: "Go forward, attempt great things, accomplish great things." She did. You will. Mount Holyoke's mission is to provide an intellectually adventurous education in the liberal arts and sciences, offering internationally recognized academic programs. The College fosters an exceptionally diverse and inclusive learning community, supported by a highly accomplished and dedicated faculty and staff. Building on a historic legacy of leadership in women's education, Mount Holyoke prepares students - through a liberal education that integrates curriculum and careers - to lead with purpose and impact.
