Located in the city of Marquette on the spectacular shores of Lake Superior in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Northern Michigan University offers an educational experience unlike any other. We focus on the attentive and intentional care of the whole person. Belonging is a core part of the Northern experience, highlighted by the intimate feeling of a vibrant, mid-sized campus and an active, culturally rich and welcoming town of 20,000 residents. Northern has a strong history of providing opportunities to a wide array of students, many of whom are first- generation college students, from rural backgrounds, Pell eligible, LGBTQ , Native American, or from other minority groups. We also concentrate on providing outstanding academic experiences. NMU is rated by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top 25 public universities in the Midwest. NMU's student-faculty ratio is 18:1 and the average class size is 26. Our 7,200 students are taught by caring faculty who are famously accessible in and out of the classroom. Most of our 190 degree programs feature immersive learning opportunities and hands-on research available early in a student's undergraduate training and continuing on through our master's and doctoral programs. At the undergraduate level, NMU offers bachelor's and associate degrees and certificates. Some unique academic experiences include studying at the world's first cold-climate forensic anthropology research station or the only northern climate indoor agriculture degree program in the U.S. Criminal Justice students work with State Police to solve real cold cases. Psychology students help children with autism at our Behavior Education Assessment and Research Center. NMU is one of Michigan's most affordable universities, transfer-friendly and military-friendly. With the second lowest tuition of all public universities in the state, an average financial aid package of $14,500 and 95 percent of freshmen receiving aid, NMU is committed to making a quality education affordable. The in-state tuition rate if offered to students no matter where they live in the U.S., with a 2.25+ cumulative GPA. Students with a 2.25 high school/2.0 college GPA will be admitted to NMU. There are no application fees, and all students get a laptop computer.
