From the Institution

For more than 100 years, Texas Tech University in Lubbock has shown that it can adapt to the changing landscape of education to meet the demands of students in a wide array of disciplines. Founded as Texas Technological College in 1923, the school opened two years later with six buildings and 914 students, with the first graduate-level instruction beginning in 1927. The School of Law welcomed its first class in 1967, and by the mid-1970s, Texas Tech had six colleges: Agricultural Sciences, Arts & Sciences, Business Administration, Education, Engineering and Home Economics. Today, Texas Tech has 13 colleges and schools and 15 academic locations, including TTU Costa Rica, which opened in 2018. Texas Tech has distinguished itself by earning the Very High Research Activity designation from the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education and recognition as a Hispanic Serving Institution by the United States Department of Education. Since its founding a century ago, Texas Tech has provided generations of Red Raiders with a strong foundation for achievement and, in so doing, has contributed significantly to the prosperity and vitality of the state of Texas, the nation and the world.
