From the Institution

The University of Mary Washington is a premiere, public liberal arts and sciences institute in Fredericksburg, Virginia, with a student body of nearly 4,000. The University consists of three colleges - arts and sciences, education, and business - and three campuses, including locations in nearby Stafford County and Dahlgren. Small class sizes and a low student-to-faculty ratio allow UMW students to receive individual attention in interactive classes that cut across disciplines and encourage critical thinking. A student-run Honor System, collection of common experiences and history of rich traditions foster a sense of community that permeates campus. Our ASPIRE values - accountability, scholarship, personal and institutional integrity, inclusive excellence, respect and civility, and engagement - shape the ways we teach, learn and live. Mary Washington offers more than 100 majors, minors, courses of study, certificates and pathways, along with several graduate programs. Biology, business, computer science, education and psychology are among the most popular majors, with an option for students to design their own. UMW also is home to one of the nation's oldest and most respected historic preservation programs. Pre-professional tracks - including dental, law, pharmacy and veterinary - along with agreements with other schools provide transformational learning opportunities that give students a jumpstart on graduate school and dynamic careers. More than 95% of our courses are taught by faculty with terminal degrees, and we have no teaching assistants - zero. A rigorous Honors Program offers extraordinary classroom, leadership and extracurricular opportunities. A top producer of Fulbright students and Peace Corps volunteers, UMW emphasizes hands-on learning focused on community service, internships, study abroad and research. Students often work side-by-side with faculty members, presenting findings at national conferences and in prestigious publications. Nearly a third of UMW students participate in a plethora of study abroad programs. UMW's NCAA Division III sports teams have reached national championships, and the University claims a host of intramural and club sports, and student organizations. Mary Washington's location, an hour from both Richmond, Virginia, and Washington, D.C., provides students with unique internships, research excursions and recreational opportunities. The campus claims brick columned buildings and tree-lined walkways, just blocks from the scenic Rappahannock River.
