As a public, comprehensive institution located in the heart of the Carolinas, Winthrop upholds a tradition of national caliber academics, championship athletics and a student-centered approach. The university provides an education that blends liberal arts, professional programs, global awareness and civic engagement with an emphasis on lifelong professional and personal development. In addition to a commitment to academic excellence, Winthrop prides itself on its diverse, close-knit campus family. Winthrop grants 46 undergraduate degrees and 23 graduate degrees across four colleges: the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business Administration, the Richard W. Riley College of Education, Sport and Human Performance, and the College of Visual and Performing Arts. Winthrop is one of only 37 U.S. universities and the only S.C. institution with all of its undergraduate and graduate arts programs - theatre, dance, music, fine arts and design - nationally accredited. The business college is AACSB-accredited - a designation held by less than 5% of programs worldwide. Winthrop is one of only seven institutions world-wide formally affiliated with the Foundation for Critical Thinking for integrating and teaching critical thinking in a substantive way. Alumni from our teacher education program are highly sought-after, and students in our science programs are often accepted to prestigious masters and doctorate programs. Winthrop enrolls a student body of around 5,000 graduate and undergraduate students. Undergraduates represent 40 states and 36 countries with minorities comprising 45% of the student population. The student-faculty ratio is 12:1, the average class size is 19, and 85% of full-time faculty hold terminal degrees in their discipline. Winthrop has been listed in U.S. News & World Report's Top 10 Regional Public Universities in the South in the magazine's "Americas Best Colleges" for more than two decades. The university was recognized in 2017 by the Education Trust as a national leader in graduating minority students.
