From the Institution

Celebrating 175 years, Wittenberg University is a highly personal, active and engaged academic experience. With more than 900 courses across more than 80 majors, minors and special programs, Wittenberg's award-winning professors push students' thinking beyond what is comfortable and into what is important. The new Connections curriculum challenges students to engage in experiential learning, learn core skills, and think creatively and critically. Wittenberg University was chartered in 1845. Ezra Keller, Wittenberg's founder and first president, determined that Springfield, then a boom-town in south-central Ohio, would be an ideal location. More than 175 years later, the University sprawls across more than 120 picturesque acres. Wittenberg is home to nearly 1400 undergraduate and graduate students hailing from 37 states, and regularly hosts international students. The University commits to academic excellence in a changing world focused on preparing students to thrive in their personal and professional lives. Students become responsible global citizens, discover their callings, and lead personal, professional, and civic lives of creativity, service, compassion, and integrity. Boasting a student- to-faculty ratio of 12:1 and an average class size of 20, the historic heart of Wittenberg is a dedicated faculty and staff that specializes in personal attention and its friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Wittenberg's students participate in more than 125 clubs and organizations on a vibrant residential campus. They give back, performing an average of more than 25,000 hours of community service in the local community, the region, and the world; and, in turn, gain a richer understanding for diversity and multiculturalism. Intercollegiate athletics is an integral part of campus life with 25 teams competing at the highest levels of NCAA Division III. Most notably, in 2019, Wittenberg officially dedicated its new $50-million, 265,000-square-foot fully renovated and expanded Health, Wellness, and Athletics Complex, and its centerpiece, The Steemer indoor practice facility, named for Wittenberg alumnus-owned Stanley Steemer. Wittenberg's motto, "Having Light We Pass It On To Others," daily inspires students. Whether it is traveling the globe for study, continuing on to graduate school or making an immediate impact in their communities after graduation, Wittenberg students leave their mark wherever they go.
