From the Institution

Virginia Military Institute (VMI), the nation's first state-supported military college, is committed to developing leaders of character for both military and civilian service. Founded in 1839 and located in historic Lexington, Virginia, VMI combines a rigorous academic program with a demanding military lifestyle to produce graduates known for their resilience, discipline, and integrity. VMI cadets experience a unique educational journey that challenges them academically, physically, and ethically. Our academic offerings span liberal arts, sciences, engineering, and more, emphasizing critical thinking, problem-solving, and ethical leadership. The Institute's military structure instills discipline and leadership skills, preparing cadets for both civilian and military careers. Cadets participate in the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) and may commission into the U.S. Armed Forces, although many graduates excel in fields beyond the military, empowered by the Institute's robust alumni network. VMI's honor code and tight-knit community foster a culture of accountability and camaraderie. Each cadet learns to lead with integrity and serve a cause greater than themselves, embracing VMI's values of honor, duty, and service. Our alumni have distinguished themselves in every walk of life, from high-ranking military officers to corporate leaders and public servants, united by the principles instilled during their time at VMI. At VMI, we prepare leaders who are ready to make a difference in the world.
