Jazz at the Ballroom Scholarship recognizes and rewards, with scholarships for further study, high school students in California who demonstrate excellence as jazz musicians.

Requirements
  • This competition is open to students at high schools in California who are between 14 and 18 years of age.
  • Applicants must submit a digital recording, up to 15 minutes in length, of 3 jazz audition pieces: an uptempo standard, a ballad standard, and a blues piece.
  • They must also submit a paragraph explaining their background in jazz, their favorite artists and musical influences, their future goals and plans in music and jazz study, and how they plan to use the scholarship money.
  • Performances are judged on the basis of musicality, melodic development and delivery, harmonic understanding, rhythmic feel, technical ability, improvisation clarity, creativity, and swing feel.
  • Scholarships are based solely on talent, skill, performance, and interest in jazz.
  • Neither academic performance nor financial need is considered.
