Prospective 7-12 Secondary Teacher Course Work Scholarship provides financial assistance to undergraduate student members of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) who are preparing for a career as a secondary school mathematics teacher.

Requirements

This program is open to full-time undergraduate students who are 1) student members of NCTM; 2) currently completing their sophomore year of college with a GPA of 3.0 or higher; 3) scheduled for full-time study at a 4-year or 5-year college or university in the next academic year, and 4) preparing for a career as a certified teacher of secondary school mathematics.

Applicants must submit a proposal that includes official transcripts, a list of courses remaining to be completed in order to fulfill the requirements for teacher certification within a 3year period, an itemized budget that includes how they plan to allocate funds from this scholarship for the third and fourth years of full-time study, a list of extracurricular or professional activities that demonstrate their commitment to becoming a secondary school mathematics teacher, letters of recommendation, and a 2-page essay on why they have chosen to prepare for a career as a secondary school mathematics teacher, how mathematics should be taught to all learners, and why mathematics is important to know and understand.

Selection is based on academic achievement and commitment to a teaching career in secondary school mathematics.

Recipients are required to submit a transcript and a brief report at the end of each year of study.
