Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship for Service provides scholarship/loans and work experience to undergraduate and graduate students in designated STEM disciplines that are of interest to the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD).

Requirements
  • This program is open to full-time undergraduate and graduate students working on a degree at U.S. institutions in any of the following fields: aeronautical and astronautical engineering; biosciences; biomedical engineering; chemical engineering; chemistry; civil engineering; cognitive, neural, and behavioral sciences; computer and computational sciences and computer engineering; electrical engineering; environmental sciences; geosciences, including terrain, water, and air; industrial and systems engineering (technical tracks only); information sciences; materials science and engineering; mathematics; mechanical engineering; naval architecture and ocean engineering; nuclear engineering, oceanography; operations research (technical tracks only); or physics.
  • Applicants must be citizens of the United States, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, or the United Kingdom who have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • They must be available to work as interns at DoD laboratories during the summer months.
  • Selection is based on academic records, personal statements, letters of recommendation, and ACT/SAT or GRE scores.
