Requirements

This program is open to high school seniors, students with GED diplomas, undergraduates at 2- and 4-year colleges and universities, and vocational/trade school students.

Applicants must have "a compelling desire to pursue higher education," in spite of personal, socioeconomic setbacks, such as teen pregnancy, former incarceration, interrupted schooling, poverty, or homelessness.

They must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, younger than 25 years of age, and have a GPA of 2.0 or higher.

Recipients are expected to "give back" by conducting community service and by serving as mentors to younger, aspiring Shawn Carter Scholars.
