South Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation Department Journalism Contest recognizes and rewards, with college scholarships, high school students in South Carolina who submit outstanding newspaper articles on topics related to the employment of people with disabilities.

Requirements
  • This competition is open to South Carolina residents between 16 and 19 years of age enrolled as seniors in high school or otherwise qualified to begin postsecondary education no later than 1 year after the contest.
  • Applicants are not required to have a disability, but they must submit a newspaper article, up to 3 pages in length, on a topic that changes annually but relates to the employment of people with disabilities.
  • A recent topic was "The Right Talent, Right Now." Articles should use correct grammar and sentence structure and follow the standard journalistic practice of the 5 Ws (who, what, where, when, and why).
  • Applicants must be able to demonstrate financial need.
