Walter Gore Memorial Scholarship recognizes and rewards, with college scholarships, members of the U.S. Coast Guard Chief Petty Officers Association (CPOA) or the Coast Guard Enlisted Association (CGEA) who submit outstanding essays.

Requirements
  • This competition is open to Coast Guard personnel who have been members of the CPOA or CGEA for at least 1 year, regardless of age.
  • Applicants must be attending or planning to attend a college, university, or vocational school.
  • They must submit an essay, up to 500 words, on a topic that changes annually; recently, students were asked whether the U.S. Coast Guard construct a nuclearpowered fleet of icebreakers in order to maintain a continuous year-round presence in the Arctic.
  • The authors of essays judged most outstanding receive these scholarships.
