From the Institution
On July 1, 2021, the University of Tennessee System acquired Martin Methodist College and renamed it the University of Tennessee Southern, making it the System's fourth undergraduate institution. The college entered acquisition discussions with the UT System during the 2020-2021 academic year, with presidents Dr. Mark La Branche and Randy Boyd agreeing this acquisition will not only help sustain the college but will also boost economic growth in the local and surrounding communities. With more affordable tuition prices and academic opportunities, the University of Tennessee Southern has been and will continue to honor founder Thomas Martin's legacy and merge its current vision with the bold, new ideas from the UT System, holding a strong focus on significantly boosting enrollment numbers. The institution has already established a number of initiatives, including two mobile nursing units established in partnership with the Golden Cross Foundation, the creation of the Jeannette M. Travis School of Nursing, a home base to the Gattis Leadership Academy, a collaboration sponsor with Giles County Schools for the Read to be Ready summer camp that serves vulnerable rising first through third graders, and the creation of the Teacher Assistant to Teacher Licensure program that establishes a pathway for teacher assistants in Southern Middle Tennessee to complete the courses necessary for teacher certification. In 2020, the institution was awarded a five-year Title III Strengthening Institutions Program Grant, totaling over 2 million dollars. With the addition of Cybersecurity, Computer Information Systems, and Public Health Education, this grant has significantly expanded our STEM programs. We are excited to now be a part of the UT System's family, and we are eager to continue forward on this journey as the University of Tennessee Southern.
