A Healthy Approach to College Planning

Finding the Right College Fit With Your Teen

Fit is more than a feeling. It can make or break college success. Start by talking with your teen about what matters most to them.

Fit Is Imperative to Your Teen's Success in College

When teens find a good fit—one where they see academic success, a sense of belonging, and clear value in their investment—they're more likely to graduate within four years. But every teen defines those factors differently. Finding a fit starts with understanding your teen's strengths, aspirations, and needs.

Research-backed information you can trust

The Barriers Standing Between Teens and Fit

In spite of growing and wide recognition of the importance of fit, many teens still experience barriers to finding theirs—from prestige and pressure to misinformation about their options. Fewer than half of first-year students completely agree their college is a good fit, and many lose time and money through unplanned transfers as a result. If this feels familiar, you're not alone.

A Culture of Prestige

A dominant culture of prestige around college narrows teens' views of their options, implying that value comes from only a small set of schools. It's no surprise that 70% of teens fear a small mistake could keep them from a good college. But mistakes are lessons, not dead ends.

The Pressure of Peer Conversations

Peer conversations, both online and offline, can put pressure on teens, who are often constrained by what they see and hear around them. In fact, 56% feel pressure to have their future "figured out." Exploring options—not having it all figured out—is what actually opens doors.

Misinformation and Lack of Transparency

Teens are overloaded with information about college, but it's often not relevant to their unique needs—and a lack of transparency around true costs and financial aid makes it hard to accurately assess financial fit. More than half of first-year students said it was difficult to find helpful information to make their college decision.

Your Teen's Fit Starts with a Conversation

As a parent or family member, it can be hard to know where to start, what to say, and how to help. Every teen has their own aspirations, needs, and strengths. A conversation is the first step toward helping your teen find the fit that’s right for them.

Vision Building

Instead of asking “where do you want to go?” try asking "what do you care about?” and “how do you picture your life as an adult?” Finding the right fit starts with understanding their goals and needs.

Opportunities to Explore Skills and Interests

Talk with your teen about their strengths based on assessments and coursework. Encourage them to try new courses and experiences to test things out, build skills, and learn as they go.

Access to Relevant Information

There's a lot of information out there. Help your teen focus on what’s most relevant to them, like expected costs and available aid, or career outcomes of graduates for specific majors.

Perspective from Caring Adults

You know your teen best. Help them discover a range of options, weigh trade-offs, and get perspective without pressure. There's more than one right path to a good fit.
