From the Institution

IU Kokomo is renowned for its commitment to an individualized student approach, offering a private school experience at a public school price. Our students earn a world-class Indiana University degree in an intimate regional campus environment, where small class sizes and an outstanding student-teacher ratio afford students opportunities to build lasting relationships with resident faculty. IU Kokomo is the home of the KEY ("Kokomo Experience and You"), which offers transformative High-Impact Practices and experiential learning opportunities to all students. Through a wide variety of hands-on experiences, our students learn to apply and integrate their knowledge and skills, collaborate with others, take initiative, and develop a mindset for success and service. Along the way, they make important connections with classmates, faculty, and members of the larger community. Experience is at the heart of the KEY. It comes in a variety of forms, including faculty-mentored research, internships, retreats, overseas study, domestic field trips, and project-based learning coordinated by the new KEY Center for Innovation. Most of these experiences are free to students and include educational components tied to students' majors. Many also include opportunities to network with professionals in the field. For example, Communication students have traveled to Chicago, where they heard from IU alumni already succeeding in the world of public relations, toured WBEZ studios and Wrigley Field, and met professionals at a leading PR firm. Students in Nursing, Sciences, and Health Sciences have attended conferences, and many have presented their own research. Some students exercise their creative muscles in retreats, where they immerse themselves in their art or writing, and publish their work in our Field magazine. Some of our interdisciplinary KEY experiences have included trips to Yellowstone National Park to study geology and biology; New York to study art, political science, and communication; and Disney to study business, hospitality and tourism, criminal justice, sociology, and psychology. Our message to students is simple and heartfelt: "Get ready to love learning, graduate on time, land a good job, and start changing the world. You have the KEY." As a comprehensive university, we offer more than 60 degrees and programs. All students participate in a core general education program that provides them with broad intellectual capabilities including academic knowledge, communication and analytical skills, and strong understanding of their part in a global, diverse world. In addition to our face-to-face classes, IU Kokomo offers both online and hybrid courses and programs to provide students flexibility in their learning. Facilities include state-of-the-art classrooms, nursing simulation labs, a crime lab, and several science labs. The academic experience is enhanced through a full complement of extracurricular opportunities, including athletics, student government, a student newspaper, dozens of student organizations, and a new Multicultural Center celebrating IU Kokomo's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. A robust range of student support services further reflects our commitment to student success. From day one, students join a community of learners in freshman seminars, where together they navigate the campus environment, make connections with classmates, develop strategies for academic success, and explore major and co-curricular opportunities. Throughout a student's time at IU Kokomo, professional academic advisors deliver highly personalized advising focused on the success of the whole person. Students enjoy access to a career center, success coaching, accessibility center, math and writing centers, technology and information resource training, counseling and psychological services, a resource navigator, food pantry, campus health and wellness center, and fitness center.
