Your Guide to SAT Fee Waivers

Making College More Affordable

Applying to college comes with many costs, but the SAT fee waiver program can help you save money.  If you’re eligible, you can take the SAT for free with a fee waiver—and unlock other valuable benefits that help you on your college journey.

What Does an SAT Fee Waiver Cover?

If you qualify for an SAT fee waiver, you can:

  • Take the SAT twice for free

  • Send your scores to as many colleges and scholarship organizations as you want—for free

  • Get your college application fees waived at participating schools

  • Access free college planning resources

These benefits are designed to help you take important steps toward your future without worrying about cost.

Am I Eligible for an SAT Fee Waiver?

You may qualify if any of the following apply to you:

  • You’re enrolled in or eligible for the National School Lunch Program (NSLP)

  • Your family meets income eligibility guidelines

  • You’re in a program like Upward Bound

  • Your family receives public assistance

  • You’re in foster care, living in federally subsidized housing, or are unhoused

  • You’re a ward of the state or an orphan

If you’re unsure, check with your school counselor, parent, or guardian.

How Do I Get My SAT Fee Waiver?

There are  two ways to get your fee waiver benefits:

Option 1: Get a Code from Your School Counselor

  • Talk to your counselor to confirm your eligibility.

  • If you qualify, they’ll give you a 12-digit fee waiver code.

  • Enter this code when you register for the SAT, and your benefits will automatically appear in your College Board account.

Option 2: Use the Self-Identification Process

  • If getting a code from your counselor isn’t possible, you can request a fee waiver directly from College Board:

  1. Review the eligibility criteria to confirm you qualify.

  2. Complete the SAT Fee Waiver Request Form at least 1–2 weeks before you plan to register.

  3. List an adult who can confirm your eligibility (such as a teacher, counselor, or program leader).

  4. College Board will review your request and email you with the decision.

  5. If approved, your benefits will appear in your My SAT account automatically.

Both options give you access to the same great benefits.

What Are My Next Steps?

Step 1: Check if You’re Eligible

Look at the eligibility list or talk to your counselor to see if you qualify.

Step 2: Choose How to Apply

  • If your counselor can provide a code, use it when registering.

  • If not, request a fee waiver directly through the Self-Identification process.

Step 3: Register for the SAT

  • Once you have your fee waiver, register for an upcoming SAT date that works for you.

  • The SAT is offered multiple times a year—so choose the date that best fits your schedule.

Taking the SAT is a key step toward your future, and a fee waiver helps make it easier. If cost has been a concern, now’s the time to take advantage of this opportunity and move closer to your college goals!
