From the Institution

The University of Puerto Rico at Arecibo (UPRA) was founded in 1967 as the Colegio Regional de Arecibo. It began operations in August of that same year with 515 students and a faculty of 28 professors. In 1974, the current facilities were inaugurated, located on a 50-acre property in Barrio Hato Abajo, Sector Hoyo Los Santos, Carretera 653, Km 0.8, Arecibo, Puerto Rico. That same year, the college was accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) for the first time. After thirteen years of existence as a regional college, the Board of Postsecondary Institutions (JIP), in Certification Number 23 of the 1980-81 Series, authorized the conversion to the Technological College of Arecibo (CUTA). With this change in academic focus, bachelor's degree offerings were expanded. On July 1, 1998, through Certification Number 151 of the 1997-98 Series, and in accordance with the provisions of Law 16 of June 16, 1993, the Board of Trustees of the University of Puerto Rico agreed to grant institutional autonomy to CUTA, which then became the University College of Arecibo (CUA). Through Certification No. 2000-205, it agreed to authorize the beginning of the name change process from CUA to University of Puerto Rico at Arecibo (UPRA). Finally, the Board of Trustees approved on March 9, 2000, through Certification number 103 of the 1999-2000 Series, the new naming scheme for CUA to be designated UPRA. Currently, the University of Puerto Rico at Arecibo has an enrollment of approximately 2,845 students and a faculty of around 207 professors. It offers 14 bachelor's programs, 3 associate degree programs, 7 articulated transfer programs, a post-bachelor's certificate, and a master's degree. In June 2019, MSCHE reaffirmed the university's accreditation. The institution also obtained a license from the Board of Postsecondary Institutions (JIP) (Certification No. 2007-097 PRCHE).
