Taking the SAT during school?
Taking the SAT in school? This article tells you what to expect and how to prepare.
What's SAT School Day?
Many U.S. schools now offer the SAT in school on a school day. Taking the SAT on a school day is usually only open to students at that school, usually juniors in the spring and seniors in the fall. In some states, districts, and schools, the entire grade level tests, while in others it’s up to each student to decide. Your school may also be a test center that offers the SAT on a weekend, and you can participate in both opportunities.
To be included if you're homeschooled, reach out to participating schools or district offices at least four weeks before the testing window begins.

Is the test the same as a Weekend SAT?
Yes. The SAT during a school day is an actual SAT, just like the weekend SAT, but your school decides whether to offer it. In some states, the essay portion of the test is also required.
If you’ve taken a PSAT 8/9, PSAT 10, or PSAT/NMSQT, you’ll recognize the same types of questions and similar formats on the SAT. Just like the PSAT-related assessments, the SAT is digital.
My school says it's optional for me to take the SAT. Should I?
Yes! Taking the SAT at your school and at a time you’re immersed in schoolwork will give you confidence to perform the best you can. And remember:
- The SAT tests what you’re learning in your high school courses and helps you stand out on college applications, including applications for colleges that require test scores or have test-optional policies.
- You can decide which colleges to send your scores to, so you can keep your options open.
- You’ll get exclusive access to the BigFuture School mobile app to perform crucial tasks such as getting your scores, connecting with colleges and scholarship opportunities, and exploring customized career guidance.
