From the Institution

Situated in a scenic valley in the heart of the Southern Appalachian Mountains, Western Carolina University is a dynamic community of higher education that incorporates teaching, research, service and engagement to provide unique learning opportunities for more than 12,000 students. All of WCU's academic programs and outreach activities are focused on improving the lives of individuals while contributing to the partnerships, initiatives and leadership of the region the university serves. The westernmost campus of the University of North Carolina System, WCU has grown from its founding in 1889 as a one-room schoolhouse with 18 students to become an institution of national recognition. The university regularly receives high marks for its academic quality and return-on-investment from publications such as US News & World Report, while faculty often are called upon by local, state and national media to provide commentary on issues facing the nation and world. As a regional comprehensive university, WCU offers more than 120 undergraduate majors and concentrations, including a nationally recognized teacher education program, a criminal justice program used as a model across the state, the nation's first accredited four-year emergency medical care program and a nationally ranked nursing program. The student/faculty ratio is 17 to 1. There are more than 40 doctoral, graduate degree and certification programs, with courses available online, in hybrid format, and as traditional classroom instruction.
